Illuminating Innovation: Coursera Sound Reactive Dimensional LED Mural

Sound reactive dimensional LED mural by Strider Patton at Coursera's Mountain View office.

In 2018, I had the exciting opportunity to design and install a series of three mixed media murals at Coursera's offices in Mountain View, CA. This project was particularly innovative, incorporating sound-reactive LED lighting into dimensional 3D wood panels to create an interactive and engaging experience for employees and visitors.

The Vision

Coursera wanted the murals to reflect their commitment to innovation and learning, creating an environment that would inspire creativity and engagement. The idea was to blend art with technology, using sound-reactive lighting to make the murals come alive in response to ambient sounds.

The Creative Process

The creative process began with designing the murals to incorporate both visual and interactive elements. Two of the murals featured intricate 3D wood panels, carefully crafted to add depth and texture. The panels were then backlit with LED lights programmed to react to sounds within the space.

This sound-reactive element was a key feature, designed to engage viewers by inviting them to interact with the murals. The lights would change in intensity and color based on the ambient sounds, creating a dynamic visual display that evolved throughout the day.

Execution and Challenges

Installing the murals required precise coordination and collaboration with lighting and sound technicians to ensure the LED system worked seamlessly with the wood panels. One of the main challenges was programming the LED lights to respond accurately to various sound levels and frequencies, creating a fluid and harmonious interaction between the lights and the environment.

Despite these challenges, the project was executed smoothly, thanks to the collaborative efforts of everyone involved. The result was a series of murals that not only enhanced the visual appeal of Coursera's offices but also provided an interactive experience that encouraged engagement and creativity.

The Impact

The completed murals have been a focal point in Coursera's offices, providing employees and visitors with a unique and engaging visual experience. The sound-reactive LED lighting has sparked conversations about the intersection of art and technology, highlighting Coursera's innovative spirit.

Reflecting on this project, I am proud of the creative and technical achievements it represents. It was an opportunity to push the boundaries of traditional mural art, integrating interactive elements to create a truly unique and impactful installation.

Illuminating Creativity: Twitch HQ Mixed Media Mural Installation

In 2018, I had the incredible opportunity to create a mixed media mural installation for Twitch's new headquarters in downtown San Francisco. This project was a unique fusion of painted surfaces and neon light art, resulting in a vibrant and dynamic piece that perfectly complements the innovative spirit of Twitch. Working alongside the talented art consultants and dear friends at Building 180, we brought this ambitious vision to life, transforming the workspace into a captivating visual experience.

The Vision

Twitch, a leading live streaming platform for gamers and creators, sought an art installation that would reflect its dynamic culture and innovative ethos. The goal was to create a mural that not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of their new HQ but also embodied the energy and creativity that Twitch represents. The mural needed to be engaging, modern, and in sync with the vibrant community that Twitch fosters.

The Creative Process

The creative process began with extensive brainstorming and collaboration with the team at Building 180. We aimed to design a mural that would incorporate multiple surfaces within the office space, creating a cohesive and immersive experience. The inclusion of neon lights was a key element, as it added a contemporary and electrifying touch to the mural.

I collaborated with a local neon light artist to integrate bursts of neon within the mural design. This partnership allowed us to create a stunning interplay between painted elements and neon lights, resulting in a mural that is both visually striking and dynamic. The neon lights were strategically placed to highlight specific areas of the mural, creating focal points that draw the viewer's attention.

Execution and Installation

Executing the mural involved meticulous planning and coordination. Each surface had to be prepared and primed for painting, and the placement of neon lights required careful consideration to ensure safety and durability. The mural spanned multiple walls and surfaces within the Twitch HQ, creating a seamless flow of art throughout the space.

Painting the mural was a labor-intensive process, requiring precision and attention to detail. The vibrant colors and abstract forms were designed to evoke a sense of movement and energy, mirroring the dynamic nature of the Twitch community. The neon lights were installed in conjunction with the painted elements, adding depth and dimension to the mural.

The combination of painted surfaces and neon lights added a unique and modern touch to the workspace, reflecting Twitch's innovative culture and creative spirit.

The mural not only beautified the office but also served as a constant source of inspiration and energy. It became a focal point within the HQ, sparking conversations and fostering a sense of pride among Twitch employees. The collaboration with Building 180 and the local neon artist resulted in a truly unique art installation that stands as a testament to the power of creative partnerships.
