Enhancing Ambiance and Atmosphere: The Power of Art in Daily Life

3 floor office mural for Atlassian in San Francisco by Strider Patton

As an artist, I believe that art has the power to enhance the ambiance and atmosphere of any space, from homes to offices to public places. It sets the tone. It brings energy. It creates vibes. I create art that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also emotionally resonant and meaningful.

When I create a piece of art, I pour my heart and soul into it, infusing it with my emotions, thoughts, and experiences. I want my art to evoke a feeling or emotion in the viewer, whether it's joy, contemplation, or inspiration. I view art as opportunities for experience, rather than things.

But the power of art goes beyond just the emotional impact it can have on the viewer. Art can also transform a space, creating a unique ambiance and atmosphere that can influence our moods and behaviors, individually and collectively.

For example, a vibrant and colorful sculpture can bring a sense of energy and vitality to a room, while a calming and serene mural can create a peaceful and relaxing environment. This is why I believe that art should not be relegated to museums and galleries, but rather integrated into our daily lives. When we surround ourselves with the right art, we can curate our daily life experience. We can direct our energy the way we want.

As an artist, I see my work not just as an object to be admired, but as a tool for enhancing the vibes of a space. When my art is displayed in a space, it becomes a part of the environment, influencing the way people feel and interact with the space and each other.

One of my favorite things about creating art is seeing how it transforms a space. I love hearing from clients who tell me how much they love the piece I created for them, and how it has changed the mood of their home or office or neighborhood.

But the power of art is not just limited to physical spaces. In today's digital age, art can be shared and experienced through social media and other online platforms. I use these platforms to share my art with a wider audience, in the hopes that it can bring a little bit of beauty and inspiration to people's lives.

Ultimately, I believe that art is not just a luxury or a form of entertainment, but an essential part of our daily lives. It has the power to transform spaces, evoke emotions, and inspire us to see the world and ourselves in new and beautiful ways. Art ushers us through life on a daily basis, whether we’re aware of it or not For those of us who are aware of it, we can take initiative and use art to create the best life for ourselves. And when we are the best version of ourselves, we can become the best societies as well.

Enhancing Luxury: The Poolside Dimensional Wall Sculpture in Las Vegas

Strider Patton's poolside dimensional wall sculpture in Las Vegas, featuring layered aluminum and LED backlighting.

In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to design and create a poolside dimensional wall sculpture for a luxury residence in Las Vegas, NV. This project was a unique blend of art and engineering, requiring meticulous planning and execution to ensure both aesthetic appeal and durability in the challenging outdoor environment of Las Vegas. Here’s a closer look at the creation and impact of this stunning installation.

The Vision

The client sought a piece that would not only enhance the pool area but also serve as a captivating focal point for residents and guests. The goal was to create a sculpture that seamlessly integrated with the sleek, modern architecture of the residence while adding depth and visual interest to the space. I aimed to design an artwork that embodied elegance and sophistication, with a dynamic interplay of shapes and textures.

The Creative Process

The creative process began with detailed sketches and 3D models to visualize the final piece. The sculpture was designed to feature layered aluminum elements, cut precisely using waterjet technology. This technique allowed for intricate detailing and ensured the robustness needed to withstand the extreme outdoor conditions of Las Vegas, from scorching hot summers to freezing winters.

To enhance the visual impact, I incorporated dimmable LED backlighting, which provided a stunning effect, especially during evening and nighttime gatherings. The LED lights not only highlighted the dimensional aspects of the sculpture but also added a warm, inviting glow to the pool area.

The surface of the sculpture was finished with a faux teak wood paint, chosen for its aesthetic appeal and its ability to blend harmoniously with the surrounding environment. This finish added a natural element to the modern design, creating a perfect balance between contemporary and organic aesthetics.

Execution and Challenges

The installation of the sculpture presented several challenges, primarily due to the harsh weather conditions in Las Vegas. The materials and construction techniques were carefully selected to ensure longevity and resilience. The layered aluminum provided the necessary strength, while the faux teak wood finish was both visually pleasing and durable.

Working with the installation team, we meticulously positioned the sculpture to maximize its visual impact and ensure it was securely mounted. The integration of the LED backlighting required precise electrical work to ensure seamless functionality and ease of use for the residents.

The Impact

The completed sculpture transformed the poolside area into a visual masterpiece, enhancing the luxury and sophistication of the residence. The dynamic interplay of shapes and textures, combined with the subtle LED lighting, created a mesmerizing effect that captivated both residents and guests. The sculpture not only added depth and visual interest but also fostered a sense of tranquility and elegance, making the pool area a favorite spot for relaxation and social gatherings.

Reflecting on this project, I am proud of the artistic and technical achievements it represents. It stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful design and meticulous craftsmanship in creating art that enhances and elevates living spaces.

Contained Movement Residential Sculpture

"Contained Movement" by Strider Patton is a custom sculpture blending kinetic energy and structural balance with stainless steel and glass. Commissioned for a residence outside New Orleans.

Exploring Motion and Stillness: The Journey of "Contained Movement"

In the heart of San Francisco, my latest creation, "Contained Movement," stands as a testament to the dynamic interplay between motion and stillness. Commissioned for a residence just outside New Orleans, this custom sculpture has been an exciting journey, pushing the boundaries of contemporary sculpture through the fusion of kinetic energy and structural balance.

The Vision Behind "Contained Movement"

From the outset, the vision for "Contained Movement" was to capture the essence of perpetual motion within a confined space. The challenge was to create a piece that not only exhibited fluidity but also maintained a sense of balance and stillness, inviting viewers to ponder the intricate dance between these seemingly opposing forces.

Crafting the Sculpture

Utilizing stainless steel and glass, materials known for their durability and reflective properties, I embarked on the design and construction of this intricate sculpture. The choice of materials was crucial; stainless steel provided the structural integrity needed for the piece, while glass added an element of transparency and lightness, enhancing the visual impact of the sculpture.

The process involved meticulous planning and execution. Each element of the sculpture was carefully designed to evoke a sense of motion, with flowing lines and curves that guide the viewer’s eye across the piece. The interplay of light and shadow on the reflective surfaces of the steel and glass adds another layer of complexity, creating a sense of movement even in stillness.

The Conceptual Depth

"Contained Movement" is more than just a visually stunning piece; it’s a commentary on the balance we all seek in life. The sculpture invites viewers to explore the tension between the kinetic and the static, encouraging a deeper reflection on how these forces interact in our daily lives. It’s a reminder that motion and stillness are not mutually exclusive but are interconnected, each enhancing the other.

Installation and Reception

Installing "Contained Movement" at the residence outside New Orleans was a significant milestone. The setting, with its lush surroundings and tranquil ambiance, provided the perfect backdrop for the sculpture. The residents and visitors have expressed their admiration for the piece, noting how it enhances the space and creates a focal point that is both captivating and thought-provoking.

By combining my expertise in art and engineering, I was able to create a piece that resonates with people, inviting them to explore the dynamic interplay of motion and stillness.

Conclusion

Art has the power to transform and inspire, and "Contained Movement" is a reflection of that power. It’s a piece that challenges perceptions, encourages reflection, and brings beauty to its surroundings. "Heuristic Forms" Solo Residency and Show

Strider Patton - Heuristic Forms installation

In the spring of 2017 I finished my first artist-in-residence program with TechShop in San Francisco. A residency program, which can be described as an opportunity for artists to create, research, and learn within a new space or community, is a milestone in any artists career. I have always wanted to participate in a residency program since I began painting more seriously in my mid 20s.

Heuristic Forms is a visual exploration into the intersections of identity, form, culture, space, and connection. This new body of work by Strider is unlike anything from his past 10 years as a working artist. Through this residency program and exhibition, Strider has bridged his understandings of painting with his new findings in sculptural form, navigating the powerful connections between space, value, depth, gravity and shadow.
